Static vs dynamic QR codes: what is the difference?

A static QR code encodes the destination directly into the printed pattern, so once printed the destination is permanent. A dynamic QR code encodes a managed short redirect URL; the printed pattern stays the same, but the destination can be updated. QRLynx supports both: static codes are unlimited and free, and Starter includes 3 active dynamic codes.

Use static for permanent data that will never change (a finished business card, a fixed Bitcoin address, a song link). Use dynamic for anything you might want to update: packaging URLs, campaign links, restaurant menus, real estate listings, event check-ins.

How to create a QR code with QRLynx

   Paste a URL, drop a PDF, type a WiFi password, or fill the relevant fields for your chosen type. The QR pattern updates live as you type.

   Customize the design (optional)

   Set foreground and background colors, use a gradient, choose corner styles, and add a frame with a clear call to action. A live readability score estimates design risks. Registered Starter users can also upload a logo.

   Registered Starter users can download PNG, JPG, WebP, and PNG HD files without a watermark. SVG and PDF vector downloads start on Starter+.

QR code best practices: design, print, test

A QR code is only as good as its scannability and the destination behind it. These are the rules QRLynx bakes into its design tools and recommends for every print job.

   Maintain contrast

   Use strong contrast and prefer a dark QR pattern on a light background. Test the final colors on the exact material and at the intended viewing distance.

   Respect the quiet zone

   Keep the clear border around the QR code at least four modules wide. Do not crowd it with text, images, or a frame element.

   Size matters

   Use the 1:10 size-to-distance rule as a planning heuristic, then test the actual code because data density, material, lighting, camera, and error correction also affect scanning.

   Print high-resolution

   Choose an output that suits the printer and final size. Registered Starter users can download PNG HD without a watermark. Use SVG for large-format scaling when you have Starter+ or higher.

   Test before printing

   Test the final code with several phone cameras before committing to print. Use the QRLynx Readability Checker as a design heuristic, then verify the exact exported file at its intended size, material, distance, and lighting.

   Use dynamic codes for anything you might change

   If the destination may change after printing, use dynamic mode on an eligible QR type. Use static mode when the final payload should remain fixed.

   Add a clear call-to-action

   A QR code without context gets ignored. The frame around the code should say what the user gets: "Scan to see the menu," "Scan for WiFi," "Scan to download." QRLynx ships with built-in CTA frames.

Are QR codes safe? Security at QRLynx

A QR code is just a URL in pattern form, so the safety question is really about the destination. QRLynx hardens both the redirect layer and the destination validation.

Will my QR codes still work if I cancel?

Paid access continues through the billing period. Static QR codes are unaffected. If the lower plan cannot hold every active dynamic code, overflow is quota-paused rather than deleted. When capacity is available, the owner deliberately chooses which eligible paused code to restore.

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL that QRLynx hosts. The printed pattern stays the same, and the owner can update the destination while the code is active and eligible. Static codes encode the destination directly into the pattern, so an already printed static pattern cannot be repointed.

How is QRLynx different from a static QR generator?

QRLynx supports both static and dynamic modes. A static QR stores its final payload directly, so an already printed pattern cannot be repointed. An eligible dynamic QR uses a managed short link, so its owner can update the destination without reprinting.

Does QRLynx track personal data from people scanning my codes?

Owner-facing analytics can include country, city, device class, operating system, browser, referrer, and scan time when the plan includes those dimensions. Scanner IP addresses are used for infrastructure processing such as unique-scan counting, abuse prevention, and platform logs. They are not shown to QR owners, included in scan CSV exports, or used for device fingerprinting. See the current privacy policy for the full statement.

Can I use QRLynx without an account?

Yes. You can create, customize, and download supported static QR types without an account. Create a free Starter account to save codes, upload a logo, remove the guest watermark, use dynamic destinations, and view scan analytics.

Are there any scan limits on QRLynx codes?

QRLynx plans do not impose a plan-based scan cap or overage fee. Traffic can still be restricted to block abuse or malicious activity.

Do QRLynx free downloads have a watermark?

Registered Starter users can download PNG, JPG, WebP, and PNG HD files without a watermark. SVG and PDF vector downloads start on Starter+.

How fast are QRLynx redirects?

Dynamic QR scans route through a global edge network for fast, reliable redirects worldwide. QRLynx publishes current service health and response times on its status page, but it does not publish a separate uptime SLA.

What analytics does QRLynx track?

Real-time scan counts and time-of-day patterns are included on every plan, with basic AI scan summaries. Country detail begins on Pro. City, device type, operating system, and browser detail begin on Business. Referrer is available in the Business CSV export rather than as a universal dashboard metric.

How long does QRLynx keep my analytics data?

Detailed scan records cover 90 days on every plan. The broader analytics window is 3 months on Starter, 1 year on Starter+, 2 years on Pro, 3 years on Business, and unlimited on Enterprise. Business and Enterprise can export analytics.

Can I generate QR codes in bulk?

Yes. Pro includes dynamic bulk creation for 100 codes per batch and 5 batches per month. Business supports 250 codes per batch and 10 batches per month. Enterprise supports 1,000 codes per batch with no monthly batch limit.

Yes. Business plan includes 10-member team workspaces with role-based access (owner / admin / editor / viewer). Enterprise expands this to 100 members with white-label custom domains, retargeting pixels, and dedicated support.

Can I password-protect a QR code?

Yes, on Pro and above. Scanners are required to enter a password before being redirected to the destination. Useful for age-gated content, internal documents, or paid resources.

Can I make a QR code expire on a date or after N scans?

Yes, on Pro and above. Expire rules support date-based, scan-count-based, or both. Codes can also be scheduled: turn them on at a specific time, off at another, no manual intervention needed.

Does QRLynx support smart redirects?

Yes, on Pro and above. Smart Rules can route an eligible dynamic QR by device operating system, country, or a UTC time window. The saved rule order decides which matching destination is used.

Can I integrate QRLynx with my CRM or marketing stack?

Business and Enterprise include lead capture forms, CSV export, email scan summaries, and public API access. Enterprise can configure supported Meta Pixel, Google Tag Manager, and GA4 identifiers. These features do not imply a built-in CRM integration.

Is the QRLynx API available?

Yes, on Business and Enterprise. Public REST API v1 supports creating dynamic URL QR codes, reading code details and scan totals, updating names and destinations, and rendering SVG through scoped, revocable keys.

Are QR codes safe?

A QR code can open an unsafe destination, so scanners should still check what they are opening. QRLynx applies risk scoring, threat-intelligence signals, domain-reputation checks, application security, and abuse controls to saved URL-based codes.

What happens to my QR codes if QRLynx shuts down?

QRLynx does not publish a shutdown-notice or migration guarantee. Static QR codes keep their directly encoded payload. Dynamic QR codes depend on QRLynx redirect infrastructure, so check the public status page and contact support when continuity evidence is important for a long-lived print project.

Can I use QRLynx for a Wi-Fi QR code?

Yes. The WiFi QR type creates a standard WiFi payload containing the network name, security type, and password. Compatible scanner apps and phone cameras decide how that payload is handled.

Can QRLynx generate a QR code for a vCard or business card?

Yes. Two options: a static vCard QR (the contact card is encoded directly into the pattern, works offline, never changes) or a Digital Business Card (a hosted, editable landing page with Apple Wallet and Google Wallet integration via PKCS#7 / RS256-signed JWT).

Can I use QRLynx for a payment QR code?

Yes. Bitcoin, Ethereum, PayPal, UPI, Pix, and Venmo are supported QR types. The code encodes the selected payment destination or address, while the scanner device decides which compatible app or browser handles it.

Can I use my own domain instead of qrlynx.com for redirects?

Eligible Enterprise dynamic links can use an approved owner domain instead of a QRLynx redirect-domain address. Domain verification and setup are required.
